Transition to School for New 5 Year olds

Starting school for the first time is an important milestone for all children and their whānau. Our aim is to make this transition as seamless as possible. If you are considering enrolling your child at Tirau Primary as a 5 year old there are some important steps to consider.

  1. Call the school office and make an appointment to meet the Principal so you can visit the school and discuss your child's enrolment (Your child is welcome to attend this as well) Usually we will use this opportunity to give you a tour of the school an if possible meet our new entrant teacher. It is a good idea to do this 3 to 6 months before your child turns 5.

  2. If you are in our enrolment zone we will accept your enrolment once your decision is made. If you are outside our enrolment zone we can only accept you if we have places - it does pay to get in early if you are outside our enrolment zone.

  3. About 6 weeks before your child's fifth birthday you will receive an invitation to attend transition visits. We usually do 4 visits in the 4 weeks before their start date. These visits take place on a Friday from 9:00 - 12:00 where the children join in the class to get to see how the programme and classroom works. Parents are welcome to stay during these visits and as your child grows in confidence you can leave them. If you feel your child may need extra transition or have particular needs please discuss these with the Principal.
