2017 Putaruru Winter Sports 7-aside Tournament
On Wednesday 23rdAugust our Year 4, 5 & 6 students were able to take part in the annual Putaruru Cluster Winter 7 aside tournament at Glenshea Park. This tournament is organised by Bossy Rata who is the Kiwisport organiser employed on behalf of our Putaruru Schools and she is responsible for the organisation of many of the excellent sporting opportunities our students have both here at school and in the Putaruru area. The children were in mixed teams with students from across all of our Putaruru Schools and they had the opportunity to compete in sports such as football, rugby and netball. This was a fabulous opportunity for our students to meet students from all the different schools and forge new friendships. We saw many examples of our Tirau LEARNerS displaying their school values and playing with great determination and skill. It was also fabulous to see so many parents supporting the student’s efforts. On the day there were 540 students participating with further 80 student leaders from Putaruru College and the Wharekura who looked after the teams, they were also fantastic role models who encouraged and supported all the students taking part.

Sir Peter Blake Trust Young Leaders Award 2017
On the last day of Term 3 we welcomed Emma Jones from Westpac to present this award to Zara C in Ruma Kereru. The Young Leaders Award celebrates young leaders across New Zealand in memory of Sir Peter Blake who was a great example of leadership and how, through hard work and self-belief you can achieve your dreams. Zara was nominated by our school because she is an inquisitive and mature learner who is a fantastic role model for others. She is a confident leader who shows humility at all times, she uses a range of skills to support her peers to develop their own solutions. She is a nurturing and caring member of our school family. She steps up to challenges and excels at tasks. She epitomizes our Tirau Primary School values in everything she does. Congratulations Zara!!
Our New School Jackets - Thanks to the Mathis Family.
We have been fortunate to receive a very generous donation from the Mathis family after their final child Jack finished Year 6 in 2016. The Board of Trustees in consultation with the Mathis family decided to put the money towards purchasing school jackets for use when school representatives are travelling away to competitions and events in the Waikato area. This is a very fitting tribute to a family whose children have represented our school so wonderfully over their long association with our fabulous school. We would like to publicly express our thanks to Steve, Rachel and their extended family for their generosity.
Welcome back for Term 2
We have had a wonderful start to the new term welcoming some new students to Tirau Primary. Daesha has joined Ruma Kereru, Jay has joined Ruma Kiwi and Sophie has joined Ruma Tui, we extend the warmest of welcomes to these new students and their families. We have also welcomed back Mrs Rebekah Bardoul who will be teaching in a part time role for the remainder of the year. It is great to have her back as part of the team.
At the end of last term we had a very moving and respectful ceremony to commemorate ANZAC Day and it was fabulous to see all of our students joining together to honour the soldiers and members of our Tirau community who have been a part of the past conflicts.
During the holidays Zara and Hazar, 2 of our ambassadors represented the school at the Tirau Community ANZAC service, presenting a wreath on behalf of the school and Zara also gave a reading. It was a wonderful commemoration and it was fantastic to have these two Tirau LEARNerS role models taking part.

Zuri the Giraffe
Earlier this term we were all excitedly waiting out the front of Tirau Primary School to see Zuri the Giraffe as she was moved from Auckland Zoo to her new home at Wellington Zoo. Sadly as she drove past she put her head down in her trailer and we didn't get to see her.
Yesterday we received a box from Auckland Zoo with a Zuri giraffe, a lovely letter and an adoption certificate for one of the giraffes at Auckland Zoo.
Below is a video of Zuri's trip south and Tirau School pupils and our school sign are featured at about 1min 58 secs

Please ensure that your child has an appropriate wide brimmed hat, or a cap with a flap to cover the neck. We will not be allowing children to play in the playground after Thursday if they do not have an appropriate hat. We also recommend that you apply sunscreen to your children before they get to school and that they have sunscreen to apply at school. Classes do have a supply of sunscreen for children to use if they have forgotten theirs. If you are wanting to purchase a hat we do have them for sale in the office for $8
It was great to see our learners wearing our school uniform and looking so smart in Term 1.
Our official school shirt is compulsory for all students.
The children need to wear items such as shorts, leggings, skirts or pants on the bottom but these must be full black, there are a number of places where these are available at a reasonable price.
Due to the success of our school the ministry has placed an enrolment scheme on our school. The board would like to inform the community that we do have some limited spots for those learners who live outside our ‘Home Zone’ across all levels of the school available until the end of this term. If you would like to come and have a guided tour of our school, please ring and book a tour at the office or simply pop in for a look around and get your children onto our waiting list.
